Gingko Leaf Records GLR - 005
This live recording was made at the Tribes Gallery three weeks after Inside Eye (GLR-004) and documents the first session where James, Dominic and Newman (filling in for Warren Smith) ever played together as an ensemble. The air-conditioner was not working properly on this hot and muggy summer evening which caused players and audience alike to be drenched in sweat. This session is comprised of free improvisational composition flowing from James' musical invitations. This recording is different from previous Finn recordings - in that took on a more chamber-like atmosphere and gives us hints of not only Stravinsky, Poulenc, and Roussel, but of Ellington, Monk, and Shorter. James said,"I had been thinking about Stravinsky and Roland Hanna for the previous few days leading up to this concert. Roland had come up in a recent interview with Nate Dorward of Signal to Noise. Roland taught a course for my M.A. program that devoted most of the sessions to analysing the orchestral score to the Firebird Suite - his favorite piece of music at the time."
